I love photography. It nourishes my soul and replenishes my spirit. The world is full of beauty and magic, whether in the wisp of a cloud, a misty morning in the woods, the intimate detail of a flower, or the golden sunlight on a vineyard. It is there for anyone who takes the time to be present in the moment.

My approach to photography is derived from my love of Nature and is based upon my emotional response to the beauty that I see. I strive for an artistic rendering to reveal the magnificence and miracle of life in its intimate details and grand landscapes. Photographing close-up is a form of meditation for me as I become more focused, concentrated, and enter deeper into an often unseen universe of vibrant colors and extraordinary patterns that literally takes my breath away. The world stands still and I am at peace. By photographing close-up, it is possible to transform the seemingly ordinary to extraordinary. For me, photographing grand landscapes is primarily about the quality of light and the feeling of awe and wonder I experience in the midst of such sweeping beauty

By sharing these intimate moments, through images that give form to feelings, I hope you experience a similar moment of wonder and delight, a gentle reminder of the ever present possibility of expanding our awareness to embrace the beauty and magic that surrounds us.

I am originally from the East Coast, lived extensively in the Midwest, and in 1995 moved to Carmel Valley, California where I currently reside. A scientist by training, I left academics in 2000 to pursue a new career as a freelance nature photographer and founded my company Rainbow Spirit Photography. I had no idea what I was getting myself into, but for the first time in my life, I am truly following my passion. I am self-taught and initially would not show any of my work except to close friends. The first time I showed prints (close ups of flowers) to a gallery owner, she really didn’t like them and told me so in no uncertain terms. The next day I showed the same images to the owner of an artist co-op who loved them and gave me my first show. Since then, I’ve exhibited in coffee shops, restaurants, galleries, and museums. Some of my fine art exhibition prints can be seen at Gallery Sur in Carmel, the Ventana Inn and Spa in Big Sur, and the Christopher Bell Gallery in Monterey.

I tried my hand at art fairs for about 4 years and although it was gratifying in terms of peoples’ feedback about my images, I found that doing it on my own was too much work and not very satisfying. Now I concentrate on providing fine art prints and stock images for the advertising, corporate, editorial, and home décor markets and being available for assignments and commissioned work. I’ve been fortunate to have my photography win awards in local, national, and international competitions. My images also have been published locally and nationally, in ads, magazines, books, calendars, brochures, and websites. I enjoy teaching and helping others with their photography by offering photography workshops and individual coaching. My first photography book, Wildflowers of Monterey County, published in 2002, was a labor of love.
